Denotation and Connotation

I

Denotation
In this advert i can see: a young child in a blue shirt In this image i can further see that he is in a hot place, maybe a village or a town. Also it looks empty , the top left corner has a blue drop of water next to the water aid symbol and there is a big text reading "Dig toilets Not graves". The text is written in the same font and colour as the water aid symbol. The young child's facial expression is very neutral and portrays no emotion.

Connotation
In the print advert, the largely written text is written in white which suggests the innocence of the child and how he has no control over the situation he is in. The text that reads "Dig toilets Not graves", the word graves gives connotations of death and this can suggest people in the village are dying due to the lack of water, we can infer its because of water as its a Water Aid advert. Also this suggests that he is in need of help from the charity and is in poverty. The boy's portrayed because his shirt can connote that he is maybe quite poor because its not well fitted, quite loose and a bit worn down. His facial expression is not happy as hes portrayed with a sad kind of emotionless expression which will make the viewers feel sympathetic towards the young boy making them want to donate and help out.

Analysis
The colour palette is very soft and the use of the blue can suggest the clean water and blue represents sadness and how this is a sad situation.  The colour scheme is not very balanced as the blue is more centered at the boy and the sandy colours are in the background to show the dryness and hotness of the area and how it is vital to drink clean water in those conditions.
